Saturday Rambling

Saturday Rambling

Happy Saturday and welcome to the Memorial Day weekend. I cannot believe that we are almost to June. The old adage is that time flies when you are having fun. The reality it that time flies whether you are having fun or not. If you are very busy it just seems to race by right before your eyes. I guess that is why James taught that our lives are but a vapor or a mist. They appear for a moment then they are gone. It is a good reminder to make the most of every day. In fact, the Bible instructs us to make the most of our time since the days are evil. Obviously, we live in a time when sin is running rampant and there are bad things happening all around us. That is why it is imperative that we live each day, each moment, remembering that are primary purpose is to glorify our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A long time ago, when the kids were young, Michelle and I took them to Florida on vacation. Of course, we made the obligatory trip to Disney Land while we were there (not sure I could stomach going there anymore). Outside of it be very hot, crowded, parking in the next county, and being ridiculously overpriced, it was a memorable time for the kids. One particular thing that has stuck with me was something that Hannah said that day. She had been looking forward to riding a certain ride so we went and got in line with eager anticipation. And we waited and waited and waited in the hot sun. Finally, it was the big moment. We boarded the little coaster and soon we were on our way to thrillsville. And then, as quickly as it started, it was over. Seriously, it was a very short ride. Especially when you consider how long we stood in line to have our opportunity to be wowed beyond our imagination. Even more so, Hannah had been waiting for our trip so that she could experience this particular ride. Well, we finished what seemed like 37 seconds of the thrill ride and it came to a stop. Hannah looked at me and said, “That’s it? That wasn’t worth it.” At the time, I was just glad that she didn’t want to wait in that line to ride it again. But as I thought about it, her words were quite profound. Probably all of us have wanted to go somewhere, participate in some activity, make some purchase, hoping that it would bring us a new level of satisfaction in life. Often, after a lot of time, effort and money, we come to the exact same conclusion, “That’s it? That wasn’t worth it.”

That is why our primary pursuit in life must be the things of God. We work to build on our relationship with Him, we seek to grow in Christlikeness, we live according to His Word. What we find is that if we pursue those things we can have satisfaction that lasts. It also helps us to enjoy the other things in life and not be dependent on them for our joy. Jesus gave us the proper perspective when He taught us to, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (the things of the world we often pursue: clothes, food, drink, etc.) will be added as well.

Have a great weekend. May God bless you as you pursue Him.
