Saturday Ramblings

Saturday Ramblings

Good morning church,

It certainly has been quite a week.  I hope you can join us Sunday morning at 9:00 as we have the opportunity to ordain Pastor Fitsum.  It is going to be a great day in the life of our church.

As most of you are aware, our good friend Roger Bell passed away last Sunday after a brief battle with Covid.  I encourage you to continue to pray for Pat during these difficult day.  I have included a link to the obituary in case you haven’t seen it.

Roger Bell

Preparing to do a funeral service is never easy.  It is more difficult when it is a friend that you have known for a long time.  What does make it better is when the person was a devoted follower of Christ and a family man.  A person of integrity that served in the church as well as in the community.  A person that was willing to help anyone he could at a moment’s notice.  Of course, all of that describes brother Roger.  I praise God for that and for the opportunity to have served with him in the church.

Typically, when I meet with the family in preparation for the service, I ask each of the to give me a word or a phrase that best describes their loved one.  I think it reveals a lot by the word or words that immediately come to mind.  As I thought about that the other night, I began to wonder, “What words do we want to have describe us?”  I also thought about whether the words we want would match what would be said right now.  For instance, what if the words that best describe you now are things like “hard-working” or “Chief’s fan” or “loves golf” or “funny”, “serious”, “thrifty”, “well dressed”, “fancy cars”, “good cook”, or “educated.”  There is nothing wrong with any of those.  However, at some point we should seriously consider the legacy that we are leaving behind.  Is there any more that we would want to be said about us?  As followers of Christ, our faith in Jesus should be evident as a top descriptor of who we are.  In fact, our faith in Jesus should be reflected in anything that describes us.  It should impact everything – our family, friends, work, activities, etc.

At some point, someone will share a word to remember you by.  What would you like for it to be?

A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. (Proverbs 22:1)

Love God. Love others. Impact our community. Change the world.

Pastor Larry
