Saturday Ramblings

Saturday Ramblings

Happy Saturday everyone.  I hope that you had a great week.  Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed tonight.

Thank you to everyone that made the event on Thursday a big success.  The adults did a fantastic job decorating the car trunks.  Some of you are really creative. I am so impressed with the youth that helped with all of the games. They did a really good job facilitating the games and interacting with the kids.  Brother Jim even showed up dressed as the Donald.  Overall, it was a great night and a huge win for the school.

Well, I can’t believe I fell for it.  I saw the commercial advertising wings for just 25 cents each.  Michelle and I had gone to Applebee’s a few months ago and it was not good.  Actually, it was awful.  When we left we said we were not going back.  But then the commercial displaying the beautiful and succulent wings slathered with Buffalo sauce.  It definitely caught my attention.  I should have looked away but I didn’t.  I listened to the enticing offer of plump, juicy wings for only a quarter.  My eyes feasted upon the images on the screen.  There was no turning back.  My mind was made up that I was going to try them the first chance I had.  That opportunity came on Friday when we went to lunch with Beverly and Andy.  Even though they were skeptical, they went along to placate my craving for those 25 cent delicacies.   We pulled into the nearly empty parking lot, ignoring the obvious that no one eats there anymore.  We made our way inside past the sign advertising the wings.  We were seated and waited…and waited…and waited.  Finally, we placed our order so that we could wait some more.  I asked the server how big the wings would be and the reply was that there were really good size.  Since you had to order them in increments of 5, I order 10 thinking I would need a to go box.  When the order finally arrived it was laughable.  First of all, due to less than stellar mathematical skills, there were less than 10 on the plate.  Secondly, three of them were like the stuff that falls to the bottom of a bucket of chicken.  Brother Andy sought to right the chicken deficit by mentioning it to the server.  Soon, another plate appeared with 2 additional wings glistening with delicious orange Buffalo wing sauce in contrast to the stark white plate.  A real culinary masterpiece.  I am fairly confident that I could replicate this cuisine by opening a bag of Tyson chicken, microwaving it until it was void of all moisture, and then dipping it in some generic wing sauce.  Fortunately, the ice water was cold and the lemon was fresh.  All of this gave us a good laugh.  Especially, as the rest of the table skipped the promo item that is supposed to draw customers in and opted for meals that were edible.

I guess the lesson learned is to not be lured by low prices and enticing pictures.  In fact, the lesson goes beyond that.  There are all sorts of things that are trying to get our attention, seeking to get us to fall for what they are offering.  Sometimes it is as simple as chicken wings, other times something far more serious.  Sin always offers something that is too good to be true.  Sometimes, even though we know better or we have vowed to avoid it, we fall for the lure yet again.  That is why we must always be on guard, equipped with the whole armor of God. James gives us great insight when he teaches:But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. (James 1:14-15)

The next time I suggest going to back for 25 cent wings please remind me of one of my favorite proverbs:  As a dog returns to its vomit so a fool returns to his folly. (Proverbs 26:11)

Don’t forget to set your clocks back tonight.  See you in the morning!

Pastor Larry
